The 2017 version of the HP Omen 17-inch gaming laptop is a small but welcome update to last year’s model. If you want to do office work and browse the web, well, that’s overkill. If you really need to do some video editing, this quad-core laptop can definitely get the job done. Most people don’t buy a gaming laptop to do video transcoding, but it’s good to know the performance is there to edit that video for YouTube if you want. HP’s system matches other 7700HQ-based laptops and is just a little faster than the Core i7-6700HQ found in last year’s model. What about non-game? A quick look at Handbrake video encoding shows us what we expect from a Core i7-7700HQ and 32GB of DDR4-2400 RAM.

I know I prefer to shoot in 1080p with a much higher frame rate! In fact, that’s pretty impressive for a laptop. Specifically, the average frame rate is 47 fps. This system simply crushes it at 1080p gaming.Īt 4K, we’re back down to 60fps. Again, it’s just a wee bit faster than last year’s model, but not for you to notice. When we handle the delicious Shadow of Mordor up to its maximum settings and running at 1080p, we’re able to achieve average frame rates in excess of 120 fps. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor performance With a screen of this size, a high frame rate will do more for you than those extra pixels. When I ran the game up to 3840×2160, however, performance dropped to 37fps. With G-Sync, you get all the benefits of running at those high frame rates. The new HP Omen performs about as well as last year’s similar model. Note that last year’s GTX 1070-equipped HP Omen n is only one touch faster, about 3%, which is just around the margin of error. It’s noticeably behind the GTX 1080, but well ahead of the GTX 1060. This is exactly what we expect from a GTX 1070 in a gaming laptop. Graphics scores are exactly where we’d expect a GTX 1070 to be, and just a touch under last year’s model. Let’s take a look at the performance of 3DMark’s arduous Fire Strike Extreme test. Of course, gaming performance is the number one concern of those buying a gaming laptop, and the new HP Omen doesn’t disappoint, performing in line with what you’d expect from those specs. Whichever way you cut it, HP gives you plenty of power for your dollar. If you take that display option and reduce the RAM from 32GB to 16GB, you have a very powerful gaming laptop for $1,690. Given the demands of 4K gaming and the tiny pixel size on a 17-inch screen, I think most gamers would be happier with the 120Hz 1080p version. The cost of all this equipment? Only $2,140 so far. Our battery drain test lasted over 3.5 hours, but it will drain faster while gaming. That’s still true, and it’s still the biggest strength of HP’s gaming laptop lineup. The 17-inch Omen we reviewed last year was notable for giving you plenty of high-end hardware at a very reasonable price. You can choose any keyboard color, as long as it is red.

The touchpad hasn’t changed either: it works well enough, but falls far short of the best Windows touchpads like those on the Surface Book or Surface Laptop.

The full-size keyboard is the same as last year, with red LED backlighting, a full ten-key keyboard, and a row of macro keys on the left. If you want to upgrade, you’ll need to remove a bunch of screws. You can’t get inside at all without removing at least 10 screws and removing the entire bottom. There was only one small door giving you access to RAM, and any other upgrades (like a new hard drive) would require more intensive disassembly. We particularly noted the poor serviceability of the 2016 Omen compared to other large gaming laptops. Without an abundance of USB ports, how are you going to plug in this VR rig?

Not enough USB for you? The right side has another pair of Type-A connectors, supporting USB 3.1 (Gen 1), as well as the power jack (a standard barrel connector). HP finally added a Type-C connector with Thunderbolt 3 support.
